Engaging Runaway Homeless and Vulnerable Youth
Many of the young people served through DYCD’s RHY have learned that life’s hardships, disappointments, losses, rejections and setbacks are inescapable. Working with this population is intensely challenging and can be overwhelming because all the problems you see and hear about. Yet, many of these young people remain persistent in the face of adversity.
Family conflict and maltreatment is a key risk factor to youth experiencing homelessness. Research tells us that helping youth strengthen relationships with their family, when appropriate, is key to preventing and ending youth homelessness. This work requires a cultural shift where families are recognized for their strengths, and engaged in developing a plan that promotes wellness.
